Door-to-Door Salesperson or Street Vendor

Door-to-door salespeople and street vendors sell goods at homes or from street carts and booths.

A passerby stops to ask what something costs. Could you explain the deal plainly, then let them decide without pressure?

A day in the life

1A salesperson opens a folding shopping basket for a woman beside his sidewalk cart, with coins beside the sample.

Show how the product works

Run the demo item so the buyer sees what it does, then tell them the price.

2A salesperson notes a doorstep conversation while a woman listens, with a folded basket visible in his bag.

Visit the next house

Explain the offer to whoever answers the next door, then note what you discussed for a return visit.

3A salesperson restocks his cart with folded shopping baskets and arranges an open basket for customers to inspect.

Restock and arrange the cart

Load more goods onto the cart, then set items out where shoppers can see them.

4A salesperson enters a basket order on a tablet as a woman taps her card on the payment reader.

Take the order and payment

Record what the buyer wants to purchase, then collect their money to close the sale.

Things to weigh

  • People may say no or end the conversation abruptly. You need to respect that and approach the next customer calmly.
  • Residential routes can mean walking in bad weather and working evenings or weekends.

Where AI may help

Route maps help plan visits; software records orders.

What people still lead

You listen to questions and adjust your explanation.

What we can’t predict yet

How much of the sales conversation moves to automated tools remains uncertain.

Pay in context

Earnings

Before comparing offers, separate guaranteed pay from money that depends on sales.

National employee pay

In 2025, the U.S. median was $41,380 a year, or $19.89 an hour. The lowest-paid 10% earned $32,010 or less annually; the highest-paid 10% earned $51,470 or more. These figures combine door-to-door sellers, news and street vendors, and related workers, excluding self-employed profit. They describe the pay spread, not starting and experienced salaries.

Qualify for food-cart work

What the route involves
Check your city's requirements. In New York City, submit the license application and required documents, take the food-protection course, and pass its final exam.
What it can lead to
Once you receive the Mobile Food Vending License, you can work on a properly permitted cart or truck, including as an employee.
What to check
The personal license does not provide a cart permit. Some permits have waiting lists; units with supervisory permits also need a supervisory license holder present.

Employer training and local vending qualifications lead into different versions of this work.

After entry

Career paths

This starts where the entry routes leave off: early work, growing capability, and advancement or specialization.

  1. Get the basics right

Learn prices and check orders before submitting them.

  2. Improve your explanation

Notice recurring customer questions and prepare clearer answers.

  3. Help other sellers

Train new recruits or pursue a sales-supervisor role where available.

Where you can work

Residential sales territory

You move between homes, with occasional office meetings. Much of the day happens away from coworkers.

  • Field work
  • Outdoors
  • Travel

Street cart or truck

Your selling space comes with setup and cleanup work. In New York City, food carts must follow location restrictions and return daily to a permitted storage and servicing facility.

  • Outdoors
  • Physical demands

Try it

See whether the job clicks before you commit to the path.

Choose an everyday object and give a friend a one-minute sales explanation with a pretend price. Have them ask a question, then decline. Notice whether you enjoy explaining the object and can end the conversation comfortably.

Stay safe: Keep this a private role-play with no money changing hands.
