Career profile

Recreation Therapy Assistant

Recreation therapy assistants support therapists as patients join games, art and outings that build skills.

While you lead the session, you keep track of who joins in, who struggles, and what the therapist needs to hear afterward.

A day in the life

1A recreation therapy assistant adds beanbags to a prepared game area beside a semicircle of empty chairs.

Set up the activity room

Arrange the chairs and game pieces, test the equipment and restock anything missing before the group arrives.

2The assistant demonstrates a seated beanbag toss while two older participants watch and prepare to take a turn.

Show everyone how to play

Explain the rules, take a sample turn yourself, and help people handle the recreation equipment.

3The assistant points out a participant's short toss to the therapist and suggests bringing the target closer.

Flag someone who is struggling

Watch for shifts in participation, and if someone struggles, describe it to the therapist and propose a change.

4The assistant steadies a paint tray while an older woman paints during an individual bedside activity.

Help with bedside sessions

In some clinical jobs, you also help run one-on-one sessions held at a patient's bed.

5The assistant records participation and the help provided during activities at a clinical workstation.

Write up the session

Log how each person took part and reacted, plus any help needed, in the patient record.

Fit, tradeoffs & changing tools

Things to weigh

  • Clinical jobs can involve substantial standing, lifting, and evening or weekend shifts.
  • You may work with people who are distressed or become confrontational; staying calm is part of the work.

Where AI may help

Electronic records and office software help organize attendance, reports and program materials.

What people still lead

You still explain activities, respond to participants and help a group work together.

What we can’t predict yet

How much future software can take over activity preparation is uncertain, especially when the plan must change with the people taking part.

After entry

Career paths

This starts where the entry routes leave off: early work, growing capability, and advancement or specialization. This path also has a credential or licensing boundary; see the requirements and limits.

  1. Get established

Learn the equipment and session routines so materials are ready and activities start smoothly.

  2. Develop your eye for participation

Use the therapist's feedback to sharpen your observations and suggest more useful activity adjustments.

  3. Prepare for a therapist role

Moving into professional recreational therapy means meeting additional degree, coursework, experience and examination requirements. Assistant experience alone does not confer certification.

    • Community recreation offers a different direction: experienced assistants may progress into program leadership and staff supervision.

Where you can work

Hospitals and institutional care

You work with a treatment team and patient records. Some jobs are in correctional health, and shifts may include nights or holidays.

  • Shift work
  • Physical demands
  • Safety-sensitive

Community therapeutic recreation

Related assistant jobs support inclusion in sports, arts and outings. Work can move between indoor and outdoor spaces and include family communication, attendance reports and volunteer support. Some positions are part-time or temporary.

Try it

See whether the job clicks before you commit to the path.

Teach a friend a simple tabletop game. Ask which instruction was hardest to follow, change your explanation or the materials, and try again. Write two sentences about what changed in their participation. Notice whether you enjoy adapting the activity as much as playing it.

Stay safe: Keep this a casual game, not a treatment session or a simulation of disability.
