Career profile

School Social Worker

School social workers keep students engaged, tackling behavior, mental health, attendance, home and access hurdles.

A day can include a one-on-one with a student, a family meeting, advice for a teacher, case notes and a call to a community agency.

Fit, tradeoffs & changing tools

Things to weigh

  • Large caseloads and understaffing can make the work stressful; some assignments cover several schools.
  • You may respond to child-abuse concerns or mental-health emergencies, so some conversations carry real emotional weight.
  • Case records, reports, and follow-up are core parts of the job, not occasional extras.

Where AI may help

Student information systems, electronic records, spreadsheets, email, and office tools can help organize notes, referrals, schedules, and progress information.

What people still lead

A person still has to listen, read context, earn trust, counsel students, coordinate adults, and make careful decisions during a crisis.

What we can’t predict yet

District adoption will vary, and it is uncertain how newer automation will affect school-social-worker staffing.

Getting started

Bachelor's- or master's-level route: Minnesota example

What the route involves
Complete a CSWE-accredited BSW or MSW, build school-practice experience through an appropriate field placement, and obtain both the Minnesota educator and social-work licenses.
What it can lead to
With both licenses, this is a route into school social work for Minnesota districts, cooperatives, and charter schools.
What to check
Minnesota allows BSW- and MSW-level school social workers; do not assume another state uses the same degree or license combination.

Accredited master's route: Florida Plan One

What the route involves
Earn a master's or higher degree with a graduate major in social work from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. The degree program must include at least 300 hours of field placement in a K–12 school.
What it can lead to
This meets Florida's Plan One specialization requirements for School Social Worker certification in grades PK–12.
What to check
This describes Florida's Plan One specialization route, not every certification condition; other states use different degree, placement, licensing, and education-credential rules.

There is no single national school-social-work credential. Check both the education agency and social-work board in the state where you want to work; these state examples show how routes can differ.

After entry

Career paths

This starts where the entry routes leave off: early work, growing capability, and advancement or specialization.

  1. Get established

After entry, learn the district's referral, documentation, special-education, and crisis procedures while building dependable relationships with students, families, and staff.

  2. Develop your practice

Manage plans and follow-up more independently: assess needs, coordinate services, monitor progress, and adjust support with the student and school team.

  3. Build depth or lead

Develop expertise in attendance, behavior and mental-health supports, crisis response, family engagement, or schoolwide programs.

    • Move toward district-level program coordination or supervision.

Where you can work

One-school assignment

Stay based at one campus instead of splitting the week among schools. The office arrangement and caseload depend on the employer.

  • Indoors
  • Office

Multi-school or district assignment

Split time across campuses, travel within the district, and coordinate with school teams and community specialists; travel and caseload shape the day.

Try it

See whether the job clicks before you commit to the path.

Ask a school social worker or counselor for a 20-minute informational conversation. Offer a fictional scenario: a student has repeated absences and says their housing is unstable. Ask what they would learn first, who they would coordinate with, what they would document, and what falls outside their role. Notice whether you enjoy mapping people and resources without jumping to an answer.

Stay safe: Keep the scenario fictional. Do not share a real student's private information or ask to observe a confidential meeting.
